Charles Babbage On 5 June 1833, Ada attended a party where she met Charles Babbage. Babbage, who later dubbed himself Sir Alphabet Function, was a 42–year–old mathematician and widower, who, like Ada’s father, had gone to Cambridge University. He was regarded as one of the greatest minds of the nineteenth century. His interests ranged from mechanical dolls to mechanical machines, from the probability of games of chance to the moves in a chess game.
